CBSE Grading System

When I gave the Paper of 10th and 12th in year 2012 and 2014 respectively, there was only a grade system in 10th but not in 12th. But after the CBSE rule of 2017, 12th was also put on a grade system (and the grade system of 10th was applicable from 2011). The Passing Mark is 33 in all subjects out of 100. Let's understand the grading system in CBSE.

🏆 CBSE Grading System (Class 9 & 10)

CBSE uses a 9-point grading system for Scholastic Areas in Classes 9 and 10, based on relative grading. Students are awarded grades based on their performance relative to their Percentage.

#Marks Range (%)GradeGrade Point
191–100A110.0
281–90A29.0
371–80B18.0
461–70B27.0
551–60C16.0
641–50C25.0
733–40D4.0
821–32E1Fail
900–20E2Fail

⚠️ Minimum Pass Percentage: 33% in each subject (both theory and practical, if applicable).

📚 CBSE Grading System (Class 11 & 12)

In Classes 11 and 12, CBSE follows a marks-based system along with corresponding grades in report cards. However, pass/fail is based on marks, not grades.

#Marks Range (%)Grade
191–100A1
281–90A2
371–80B1
461–70B2
551–60C1
641–50C2
733–40D
8Below 33E (Fail)

How to Calculate CGPA (for Class 10)

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average.

Formula: CGPA = (Sum of Grade Points in 5 subjects) ÷ 5

If a student's grade points in five main subjects are: 9, 8, 10, 7, 8.

Then CGPA = (9 + 8 + 10 + 7 + 8) / 5 = 8.4

To convert CGPA into Percentage: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

In this example: 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%

Hope You Understand This Well.

Why CBSE is Better than Other Boards

Among All Boards in India, CBSE is the Most Popular and Better Than Other Boards because the Syllabus of CBSE Board is the same all over India and its Level of Education is increasing according to students' capability. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is India's most preferred national education board — not just by schools, but also by parents, students, and competitive exam aspirants.

📘

Uniform Syllabus Across India

CBSE follows a centralized curriculum, which means students across India study the same content, regardless of their city or state. Great for students who relocate often due to transferable jobs (especially in Army, Air Force, Railways, etc.)

🎓

Best for Competitive Exams (JEE, NEET, CUET)

CBSE's syllabus is aligned with major competitive exams in India. Subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics are taught with a conceptual and exam-oriented approach, which helps in JEE (Engineering), NEET (Medical), and CUET (Common University Entrance Test).

📚

NCERT Textbooks – Government Approved and Free

CBSE uses NCERT textbooks – prepared by top educational experts and recommended by government institutions. They are easy to understand, concept-based, updated regularly, and available free online (e-books).

🧠

Focus on Conceptual Understanding, Not Rote Learning

CBSE encourages application-based questions, HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills), and real-life examples, which helps students develop analytical and problem-solving skills — not just memorize answers.

🌐

Global Recognition + International Reach

CBSE schools are not just in India — there are more than 240 CBSE-affiliated schools in 28+ countries. This makes CBSE a globally trusted board, suitable for students who might pursue studies abroad later.

🏫

Large Network of Schools

Over 27,000 schools in India and 240+ abroad. Makes school transfer easy. Strong governance and regular inspections ensure quality.

📊

Transparent Evaluation & Modern Exam Pattern

Continuous updates to exam patterns (MCQs, case-based, competency-based). Objective + Subjective mix. Digital initiatives like DigiLocker, OMR Sheets, e-Verification, etc. Fast result declaration with minimal bias.

🎨

Skill Subjects & Holistic Education

CBSE includes vocational and skill-based subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Entrepreneurship, Yoga, Art Education, Coding, etc. Also supports sports, co-curriculars, and moral education for balanced development.

💡

Flexibility in Streams & Subjects (Class 11 & 12)

Unlike State Boards, CBSE allows interdisciplinary subject combinations (e.g., Biology + Psychology or Math + Fine Arts), skill electives, and flexibility to choose only 5 core subjects.

Recognized by All Colleges, Indian & International

Whether you're applying to Delhi University, IITs, AIIMS, or even Harvard or Oxford, a CBSE certificate is widely recognized.

There is a reason why CBSE is considered better than other boards in India.
