Where this paper sits in the DGCA examination

Schedule II, Section J, paragraph 1(d) of the Aircraft Rules, 1937 (continued in force by section 43(2) of the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024) requires a Commercial Pilot Licence applicant to pass a written examination in Air Regulations, Air Navigation, Meteorology, and Aircraft and Engines, together with a Signals (practical) examination for interpretation of aural and visual signals.

On the DGCA Pariksha examination portal the papers are grouped into five sections: General, Oral, Technical General, Technical Specific and Technical Performance.

The paper is set for both the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and the Private Pilot Licence (PPL), and the same techniques are used in flight planning after licence issue.

What is Air Navigation?

Air Navigation is the process of determining your position, deciding where you want to go, and safely guiding the aircraft there. You'll learn to use maps, measure distances, correct for wind, and utilize navigation tools such as GPS, VORs, and compasses.

Whether flying by day or night, in clear skies or clouds, good navigation keeps you on track and safe.

Air Navigation is the process of determining the position, planning the route, and guiding the aircraft from one point to another safely and efficiently. It involves:

Visual Navigation (Pilotage): Navigating by visual reference to landmarks on the ground.
Dead Reckoning (DR): Calculating current position based on a known past position, speed, heading, and elapsed time.
Radio Navigation (VOR, ADF, DME): Using ground-based radio navigation aids to determine position and track.
GPS Navigation and Satellite Systems: Using satellite-based positioning systems for accurate en-route and approach navigation.
RNAV (Area Navigation): Allowing aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within coverage of ground-based aids or satellites.
Flight Management Systems (FMS): Automated navigation systems that manage the complete flight plan from takeoff to landing.
